Tuna Melt Recipe

A Tuna Melt is a comforting and delicious sandwich that combines tuna salad with melted cheese on toasted bread. This recipe offers a simple and flavorful way to enjoy this classic dish.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans (5 oz each) tuna, drained
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons celery, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon dill pickles, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 slices of bread (sourdough, whole wheat, or your choice)
  • 4 slices of cheddar cheese or Swiss cheese
  • Butter, softened (for spreading)

Equipment Needed:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Frying pan or griddle
  • Spatula

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Tuna Salad

  1. Mix Tuna Salad: In a mixing bowl, combine drained tuna, mayonnaise, chopped red onion, celery, dill pickles (if using), fresh parsley, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.

Step 2: Assemble the Sandwiches

  1. Butter the Bread: Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  2. Add Tuna Salad: Divide the tuna salad evenly among two slices of bread, buttered side down.
  3. Add Cheese: Top each sandwich with 2 slices of cheddar or Swiss cheese.
  4. Top with Bread: Place the remaining slices of bread on top of each sandwich, buttered side facing up.

Step 3: Grill the Sandwiches

  1. Heat Frying Pan: Heat a frying pan or griddle over medium heat.
  2. Grill Sandwiches: Carefully place the sandwiches in the pan or griddle. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  3. Press Down: If desired, press down gently on the sandwiches with a spatula while cooking to ensure even melting and toasting.

Step 4: Serve

  1. Slice and Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the pan and let them cool for a minute. Slice diagonally and serve hot.

Tips for Perfect Tuna Melts:

  • Bread Choice: Use sturdy bread like sourdough or whole wheat to hold the filling and crisp up nicely.
  • Cheese: Experiment with different types of cheese like provolone or mozzarella for a variation in flavor.
  • Additions: Customize with sliced tomatoes, avocado, or a sprinkle of paprika for extra flavor.
