Fire Cider Recipe

Fire cider is a potent tonic known for its immune-boosting properties and fiery flavor. This traditional folk remedy has gained popularity for its ability to help ward off colds and flu, making it a staple in many natural medicine cabinets. Made from simple ingredients like garlic, ginger, horseradish, and apple cider vinegar, fire cider packs a punch both in flavor and health benefits.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup peeled and grated horseradish
  • 1/2 cup peeled and grated ginger
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 10 cloves garlic, crushed or chopped
  • 2-3 fresh hot peppers (such as jalapeño or habanero), chopped
  • Zest and juice from 1 lemon
  • 2 tbsp dried rosemary
  • 1 tbsp turmeric powder (or 2 tbsp grated fresh turmeric)
  • Apple cider vinegar (enough to cover all ingredients)
  • 1/4 cup raw honey (optional, for sweetness)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Start by preparing all the ingredients. Peel and grate the horseradish and ginger. Chop the onion, crush or chop the garlic cloves, and chop the hot peppers. Zest and juice the lemon.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a clean glass jar, combine the grated horseradish, grated ginger, chopped onion, crushed garlic, chopped hot peppers, lemon zest, dried rosemary, and turmeric powder.
  3. Add Apple Cider Vinegar: Pour enough apple cider vinegar into the jar to completely cover the ingredients. Use a non-metal lid to prevent corrosion from the vinegar.
  4. Infuse: Seal the jar tightly and shake well to mix. Store the jar in a cool, dark place for 2-4 weeks. Shake the jar daily to help infuse the flavors.
  5. Strain and Sweeten (optional): After 2-4 weeks, strain the mixture through a cheesecloth-lined strainer into a clean bowl. Squeeze out as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids. At this point, you can stir in raw honey for sweetness, if desired.
  6. Bottle and Store: Pour the fire cider into clean glass bottles or jars with tight-fitting lids. Store in the refrigerator for up to 6 months. Shake well before using.

How to Use Fire Cider:

  • Daily Maintenance: Take 1 tablespoon daily to help support immune function and overall wellness during cold and flu season.
  • During Illness: Increase dosage to 1 tablespoon, 3-4 times a day at the first sign of illness to help boost recovery.

Tips:

  • Adjust Spiciness: Feel free to adjust the amount of hot peppers used to suit your taste and tolerance.
  • Variations: Some recipes include additional herbs like thyme or oregano for added flavor and health benefits.
  • Safety: Fire cider is potent, so start with smaller doses if you’re sensitive to spicy foods or acidity.

Fire cider is not only a powerful health tonic but also a versatile ingredient in culinary creations. From salad dressings to marinades, its bold flavor adds a kick to various dishes. Incorporate this homemade remedy into your wellness routine and enjoy its natural benefits throughout the year.
